Radio Spots – The U

About The U

The U: UMSL Radio is a student organization at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  It is the official on-campus radio station, broadcasting throughout the campus and on its website, not having an actual outgoing signal.

The U broadcasts 24/7 on umslradio.com and has tens of listeners on campus and on its website.  It is home to several weekly programs done by students, faculty, staff, and the community.  These programs must meet a set of broadcast standards and undergo review by the station management and executive producers.

What is a PSA?

The U is a not-for-profit division of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and thus does not air paid commercials.  Instead of that, The U airs Public Service Announcements (PSAs).

These are unpaid ads recorded and produced by The U’s staff and DJs.  I served as the primary voice for The U for the majority of my tenure there, and created over fifty PSAs during that time.

My Role

During my time at The U, I wore many hats.  When I began, I was a radio DJ, hosting my show on Monday afternoons.  After speaking with the station manager, I also took on the role of Production Director, creating public service announcements and producing spots for the station.

Beginning summer 2018, I began my one-year term as station manager, continuing my duties in production as well as:

  • Scheduling programs
  • Managing personnel
  • Diagnosing and assisting with technical issues
  • Monitoring program content
  • Managing the music library and inputting new music
  • Managing the station automation software
  • Managing social media
  • Communicating with campus contacts
  • Greenlighting PSAs

I served in this role until the summer of 2019, producing an amazing product and engaging the campus unlike The U had ever before.
